Exterior Wood Stains and Protectors
Wood stain is the go-to finish for outdoor wood: it penetrates the pores instead of forming a rigid film, so the wood can expand and contract with humidity without the finish cracking. When it's time for maintenance, simply clean and apply another coat, no stripping or heavy sanding needed.
Why color matters more than price
Pigment is the sunscreen. A colorless stain protects against water but allows UV rays to pass through, which degrades lignin and grays the wood. On south-facing exposures or on a deck without an overhang, a walnut or oak shade will last much longer than a colorless one, no matter how good the brand.

When to perform maintenance
The advantage of stain is that it warns you before it fails, and touch-ups are simple if you don't let it go too long.
- ✓ Warning sign: the wood stops repelling water. Drop a few beads; if they soak in instead of beading up, it's time for a touch-up.
- ✓ South and west exposures degrade much faster than north and east.
- ✓ If you're too late and the wood is gray, wash it with a wood brightener before applying.
- ✓ Do not mix systems: stain will not work on old, flaking varnish; you must strip it.
- ✓ The end grain (fiber cuts) absorbs much more. Give them an extra coat: this is where water enters and rot begins.
Application
- 1 → Wood must be dry and clean. Do not apply if humidity is above 18%.
- 2 → If there is a risk of fungus or insects, apply wood preservative first.
- 3 → Apply with a brush, in the direction of the grain, without overloading. The stain needs to penetrate, not build up.
- 4 → Apply two or three coats depending on absorption, respecting drying time between coats.
- 5 → Avoid direct sunlight and hot wood: the product will dry before penetrating and will look uneven.
