Sandpapers and abrasives: sheets, discs, rolls, and mesh
Sanding determines the final result more than the paint itself. Choosing the right grit, abrasive material, and backing saves time, sheet consumption, and reworks. Here you will find abrasives for wood, metal, putty, paint, and walls, in sheet, disc, roll, sponge, and mesh.
Which grit to use at each stage
Never skip more than one grit step. If you go directly from P80 to P240, the fine grit won't remove the scratches left by the coarse grit; it will only polish them, and they will remain visible under the varnish. The correct sequence is progressive, almost doubling the number each time.
| Grit | Phase | Typical task |
|---|---|---|
| P40 – P80 | Coarse sanding | Removing old paint, leveling rough wood |
| P100 – P150 | Preparation | Smoothing before priming, reducing putty |
| P180 – P240 | Finishing | Sanding between coats, preparing for painting |
| P320 and above | Refining | Varnishes, lacquers, wet sanding |
Abrasive type according to material
- ✓ Aluminum oxide: the all-rounder. Wood, paint, metal. Brown or reddish color.
- ✓ Silicon carbide: black, harder and more brittle. For wet sanding, varnish, stone, and metal.
- ✓ Zirconia: bluish, very resistant. Aggressive coarse sanding on metal and hardwood.
- ✓ Abrasive mesh: does not clog. Ideal for plasterboard, plaster, and putty, and allows dust to pass through to the vacuum.
- ✓ Abrasive sponge: conforms to moldings and curved profiles.
Work better and spend less
- 1 → Always sand wood in the direction of the grain. Cross-grain scratches appear when applying stain or varnish.
- 2 → Do not press down. The abrasive cuts by itself; pressure only clogs it and burns the surface.
- 3 → Use dust extraction or perforated discs. Dust trapped between the sandpaper and the workpiece multiplies sheet consumption.
- 4 → For wet sanding, wet the workpiece and rinse the sheet frequently to wash away residue.
- 5 → Clean thoroughly before painting. Any residual dust will show under the finish.
