About the product
Xylazel Plus Mate is the leading solvent-based protective wood stain for interior and exterior wood, trusted in the Spanish market for over 30 years. Its formulation with micronized iron oxide pigments and highly effective anti-UV additives penetrates the wood fibers without forming a surface film, providing deep protection against sun, rain, humidity, and weathering while highlighting the natural grain with an elegant matte finish. It regulates wood moisture, preventing swelling and shrinkage caused by seasonal changes. Available in 13 natural colors + colorless, all intermixable to achieve custom shades, and in 375ml, 750ml, and 2.5L sizes.
Which woods and projects is it ideal for?
- ✓ Exterior joinery — windows, doors, shutters, and wooden blinds exposed to the elements
- ✓ Exterior wood with years of wear that needs renovation without sanding or stripping
- ✓ Wooden structures on facades, pergolas, decking, and exterior cladding
- ✓ Garden and patio furniture in wood that requires sun and rain protection
- ✓ Beams, panels, and wooden elements indoors where the grain needs to be preserved and enhanced
- ✓ Interior wooden decks and floors not directly exposed to the elements
- ✓ Any wood where a natural matte finish with durable protection and no plastic-like appearance is desired
Why choose Xylazel Plus Mate
- ✓ Micronized iron oxide pigments + anti-UV filters — nanoscale pigments penetrate the fiber and block UV radiation responsible for greying and lignin degradation; the wood retains its natural color for years of direct sun exposure
- ✓ Does not form a film — does not crack, split, or peel — by penetrating deep without leaving a surface film, there is no risk of flaking; the finish ages naturally with the wood and never shows the deteriorated appearance characteristic of film-forming varnishes
- ✓ Maintenance without sanding or stripping — when the finish wears off, simply clean the surface and apply a coat directly over the previous one; this drastically reduces the time and cost of periodic maintenance
- ✓ Regulates wood moisture — hydrophobic additives stabilize moisture content, reducing swelling cycles in winter and shrinkage in summer that cause cracks, deformation, and joint failures in joinery
- ✓ 13 intermixable colors + colorless — all colors in the range are compatible and mixable; blend two shades to achieve the exact tone you are looking for without additional dyes
- ✓ Wood breathes — breathable — penetration into the fiber without an impermeable layer allows the wood to manage its internal moisture naturally, preventing condensation under the finish that causes conventional varnishes to lift
- ✓ High coverage — 10–14 m²/L — a 750ml can covers between 7.5 and 10.5 m² per coat, enough to treat all windows of an average single-family home with 2 coats

Available colors — official chart
Indicative colors vary by wood type. The colors shown accurately reproduce the official Xylazel chart.
* Colorless 101 does not offer sufficient UV protection for wood directly exposed to the sun — use preferably indoors or in covered areas.
How to apply — in 4 steps
- Prepare the surface: the wood must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or dirt. For new wood, sand along the grain with 120–150 grit sandpaper; remove dust with a dry cloth. If there is old stain in good condition (no flakes), simply clean well and sand gently with 220 grit. Remove mold areas with a fungicidal cleaner before application.
- First coat (base): shake or mix the product well. Apply with a brush or bristle brush in the direction of the grain. For very absorbent woods, you can dilute the first coat by 10% with White Spirit. Let dry for approximately 6 hours at room temperature.
- Second and third coats: apply subsequent coats undiluted. Observe a recoat time of 12 hours between coats. For new exterior wood, apply a minimum of 3 coats. For maintenance on old stain in good condition, 1–2 coats are sufficient.
- Tool cleaning: clean brushes, bristle brushes, and spray gun with White Spirit immediately after use.
Do not apply at temperatures below +5°C or above +35°C, or during rain or dew. For spray application, dilute by 10–20% with White Spirit.

Xylazel Plus Mate vs Xylazel Plus Satin
Same formulation and protection, different finish. The Mate gives a completely natural, no-sheen look, ideal for rustic woods, beams, and exteriors where the appearance closest to untreated wood is desired. The Satin adds a soft sheen that intensifies the grain — more common for window and door joinery.
Which size to choose?
375ml: to test the color or treat 1–2 windows. 750ml: most common for maintenance (3–5 windows or one door). 2.5L: best price/liter for entire facades or large projects.
Limitations and application conditions
Colorless 101 does not provide sufficient UV protection for wood exposed to direct sun — for exteriors, always use a pigmented color. Do not apply over film-forming varnishes without removing them first. Do not apply at temperatures below +5°C or on wet wood. Flammable product — keep away from heat sources during application and drying.
