About the product
Floetrol® Owatrol is the most widely used water-based paint conditioner additive by professional painters and artists worldwide — on-site to eliminate brush and roller marks, and in fine arts to create the fluid effects of pouring and fluid art. Formulated with high-quality latex, it mixes directly with any acrylic or emulsion paint without altering color or sheen, making the paint flow and level like an oil-based paint. It improves application in any adverse weather conditions, extends drying time for more comfortable work, and provides a streak-free finish comparable to spray gun application. With less than 1% VOC, it is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Available in 1L and 2.5L.
What uses and projects is it ideal for?
- ✓ Pouring and fluid art — the go-to medium for acrylic pour painting techniques; creates cells, lacing, and marbled effects with acrylic paints
- ✓ Brush painting — eliminates streaks and brush marks on walls, trim, and furniture
- ✓ Roller painting — reduces roller marks and paint buildup on edges
- ✓ HVLP gun and cup gun — lubricates the gun, prevents nozzle clogs, and improves spray pattern
- ✓ Airless spray painting — thins paint without losing opacity or adhesion
- ✓ Painting in difficult conditions — extreme heat, cold, high humidity, or problematic surfaces
- ✓ Fine art acrylics — compatible with artist's acrylic paints for decorative techniques and special effects
Why choose Floetrol®
- ✓ Makes water-based paint flow like oil-based paint — modifies the rheology of acrylic paint, causing it to self-level before drying, eliminating tool marks and producing a completely smooth, streak-free finish with no edges
- ✓ Extends working time — longer wet edges — by retarding drying, it allows edges to stay wet longer, facilitating the blending of adjacent areas without lap marks; especially useful on large surfaces and in hot conditions
- ✓ The most used pouring medium in the world — Floetrol is the absolute benchmark in the fluid art and pouring community; it provides the perfect fluidity to create cells, lacing, swipes, and dirty pours with acrylic paints without the cost of specific artist mediums
- ✓ Does not alter color or sheen in matte and semi-matte paints — adding Floetrol does not change the hue or finish of matte or semi-matte emulsion paints; in glossy paints, it may slightly reduce the sheen (see notes)
- ✓ Enhances and protects the spray gun — acts as an internal lubricant; prevents nozzle clogs and piston locking in cup guns; improves spray pattern; extends the lifespan of gun parts
- ✓ Suitable for adverse weather conditions — compensates for application problems due to extreme heat (rapid evaporation), cold, or high humidity; allows painting in conditions that would normally produce poor finishes
- ✓ Less than 1% VOC — very low emission — water-based formulation with less than 1% volatile organic compounds; no strong odor; suitable for spaces with limited ventilation; cleans with soap and water

Dosage by use
| Application | Recommended dosage | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Brush or roller (normal conditions) | 7–10% per liter of paint | 15% |
| Brush or roller (extreme heat / thick paint) | 10–15% per liter of paint | 15% |
| HVLP gun / cup gun | 5–10% per liter of paint | 10% |
| Airless spray gun | Up to 10% per liter of paint | 10% |
| Pouring / special effects | 20–25% per liter of paint | No strict limit* |
* On vertical surfaces, do not add in excess — effects may slide or disappear. Always test a small amount before final application.
How to use — in 4 steps
- Prepare the surface: Clean and prepare the surface as indicated by the paint manufacturer. Shake the paint can well before mixing.
- Compatibility test: Always mix a small amount of Floetrol with the paint before full application to verify the result. The dosage varies depending on the paint, tool, and temperature.
- Mix and apply: Add the indicated amount (according to the dosage table) and stir vigorously until fully integrated. Stir periodically during use. Apply the paint normally with a brush, roller, or spray gun.
- Cleanup: Clean tools with soap and water immediately after use. Close the container tightly after each use.
Do not apply below +5°C or above +35°C. Do not add to alkyd, glycero-phthalic, or oil-based paints — use Owatrol Oil for those paints.

Floetrol® for pouring — the most used medium
Floetrol is the most popular pouring medium in the world due to its unbeatable value for money compared to specific fine art mediums. Mix 20–25% with each color, add a drop of silicone if you want cells, and pour. Compatible with dirty pour, swipe, flip cup, and all fluid art variations.
Floetrol® vs Owatrol Oil — which one do I need?
Floetrol®: for water-based paints — acrylics, emulsion, vinyl, latex. Owatrol Oil: for oil-based paints — alkyds, glycero-phthalics, solvent-based varnishes. Never mix Floetrol with oil-based paints — for those, the corresponding product is Owatrol Oil.
Limitations and incompatible uses
Do not add to alkyd or oil-based paints (including glycero-phthalics) — use Owatrol Oil for those. Do not use in clear acrylic varnishes. May slightly reduce gloss in high-gloss paints. Do not freeze — temperatures below +5°C irreversibly damage the product. On vertical surfaces with pouring, do not exceed the dosage — the mixture may run or slip.
